Black Library Releases "Child of Night" - A Night Lords Short Story

$

The Night Lords get a Horus Heresy short story.

From The Black Library:

The story

In the dark hive sumps beneath Terra, Chief Librarian Fel Zharost of the Night Lords Legion is being hunted. Having abandoned his insane primarch and brothers many years ago, he doesn’t know what he’s done wrong, but he’s sure he doesn’t want to be captured. What will happen when he discovers that his Legion has fallen into heresy? And where will his loyalties lie?

Read it because...

Learn the fate of the Chief Librarian of the XIII Legion, former servant of Konrad Curze. The first Horus Heresy Night Lords story from John French is both an insight into changes that have taken place within the XIII Legion over the course of the Great Crusade, and a fascinating glimpse into the underworld slums of ancient Terra itself.

You can buy it here.  I did.  It's only $ 3.99.

More Mechanicum goodies from Forge World!

Forge World is the gift that keeps on giving.  Of course, its a gift that costs you lots of sheckles.

From Forge World:

Vorax Battle-Automata

Vorax class Battle-automata are hunter-killer units, their design based on an ancient template pattern said to date back to the Dark Age of Technology. Created on pre-Imperial Mars to fulfil the roles both of search and destroy weapon and exterminator of rogue machines and mutant vermin, their Cybernetica cortex engrams are known to be particularly predatory and vicious examples of their kind.

Armed with a pair of rotor cannon and a lightning gun, the Vorax are prepared to meet most threats. At close quarters their Battle-automata power blades make short work of even heavily armoured infantry units.

The Vorax Battle-automata is a complete multi-part resin kit, designed by Will Hayes. The kit consists of three Vorax class Battle-automata armed with lightning guns, with an optional Irad-cleanser. The Vorax class Battle-automata are a fast attack option for the Mechanicum Taghmata Omnissiah army list found in The Horus Heresy Book Three - Extermination.

30k Hobby Blog - Blood Angels

A new blog series on Blood Angels.

Hi, Grey Area here from the Heresy30k forums. I've decided to start a blog about the Heresy era Blood Angels army I'm building.

First off a quick look at how the army started.

Since reading a short story about the siege of Terra in White Dwarf in the early 90s I've wanted to paint a Blood Angels force to represent the loyalist defenders. When Forge World released the Space Marine Legion rules in Betrayal I decided it was finally a good tme to start.

I should probably admit I'm not a fan of the way Blood Angels look in 40k (I find them a bit too bright and I think the different coloured helmets look a bit odd) so I decided to go for something a bit darker and dirtier that fitted with my vision of the Heresy. After a few test models I came up with a paint scheme I liked.

Horus Heresy Blood Angels
Horus Heresy Blood Angels

I used paints from the Vallejo Model Air range because the colours are quite muted compared to GW colours and this suited the style I was going for. Plenty of paint chipping and some dirty ankles (courtesy of pigments) completed the look.

I tested the colours out on a Jetbike too so I could see how they looked on bigger models.

When it came to choosing what units to start the army with I decided to get the main troops choices out of the way first before moving on to the more interesting things.

The first full unit to be painted was a 20 man blob squad of Tactical marines.

Following on from the Tactical squad came the first ten assault marines. A must have unit in a fluffy Blood Angels force, but unfortunately they are pretty much just cannon fodder in 30k.

In the next couple of blog entries I'll go through the rest of the units that I've completed, before catching up with what I'm working on at present (tanks mostly). Leave a comment or contact me on the Heresy 30k Forum if there is anything you want me to go into more detail with and I'll do my best to oblige.

Forge World Knight Styrix

From Forge World:

Housing machine spirits which some say became too accustomed to wholesale slaughter during the Age of Strife and the Great Crusade that followed it, many of the more conservative Households consider the Styrix to be a dark and malevolent pattern of armour, the wanton slaughter it unleashes being beneath a true Knight. Other Households hold no such reservations, loosing entire formations of Styrix mark Knights to mercilessly annihilate their foes.

Armed with a devastating Volkite chieorovile and backed up with a graviton gun and twin-linked rad cleanser, the Questoris Knight Styrix is easily able to eliminate large numbers of infantry at range. Whilst in close combat, its immensely powerful hekaton siege claw can smash vehicles and tear buildings asunder, making it a powerful addition to any army.

The Questoris Knight Styrix can be fielded in Horus Heresy games using the Battles in the Age of Darkness expansion as part of the forthcoming Questoris Knight Crusade Army list or as a Lords of War choice for any Horus Heresy army. Its rules will be published in the next Horus Heresy rulebook.

This is a complete multi-part resin and plastic kit, designed by Rob MacFarlane.

It is available to pre-order now and will be despatched from Monday November 17th.

You can get it it on the Forge World website.

Horus Heresy: Drop Assault Video Game Coming

A Horus Heresy Video Game is coming!

This is a few weeks old, but worth bringing up since it is Horus Heresy!

From Complex Games, a new Horus Heresy Video Games promises another way to enjoy the Heresy.

via Complex Games:
"We’re excited to announce what we’ve been working on, an all-new Warhammer 40,000 tactical strategy game called The Horus Heresy: Drop Assault for iOS and Android. It’s the first ever game set in the Horus Heresy story. We’ve been huge Warhammer fans for years, so working on this game has been a truly great experience. You’ll be able to play Drop Assault this fall.

We’re developing this game in conjunction with tabletop war games leader Games Workshop® and mobile game publisher CROOZ, Inc, based out of Tokyo, Japan.

The Horus Heresy: Drop Assault invites players to choose a side in the intense civil war that erupted amongst the Emperor’s Space Marine Legions in the 30thMillennium. Players will be able to build and customize bases, muster armies, and break their enemies’ strongholds in intense tactical battles. Whether as a Traitor or Loyalist, you can create a Chapter with your friends and challenge your rivals around the world in territorial warfare to dominate and survive."

Jon Gillard, Head of Games Workshop Licensing had this to say about the upcoming title:
“The Horus Heresy is an iconic and seminal part of our IP that describes the dark period in the Imperium’s history that ultimately led to the way the Warhammer 40,000 universe looks now. As a setting it has been the basis for numerous New York Times best-selling novels, card games, and more recently some amazing models from our Forge World division. The dark treachery and over the top battles of this epic civil war make it perfect for the game Complex are making and aficionados of our worlds will be very excited about this legendary setting being brought to life as a video game for the first time.”

So go forth and kill!

Graham McNeill on The Seventh Serpent

$

0

The Black Library released The Seventh Serpent at The Black Library Weekender III this weekend.

The Seventh Serpent is a direct sequel to Angel Exterminatus, the dynamite Heresy novel that featured Fulgrim's evil scheme to use his brother Perturabo to achieve Apotheosis. The Loyalist protagonists of that novel was a ship of Iron Hands, with a surviving Salamander Atesh Tarsa and a Raven Guard, the space ninja Nykona Sharrowkyn.

According to Graham McNeill, who gave me his personal take on the novel, The Seventh Serpent follows the Sisypheum, the Iron Hands ship, after their encounter with the traitors in
Angel Exterminatus.  We see the relationship between the characters evolve as Tarsa and Sharrowkyn become an accepted part of the Iron Hands crew, we find out what is happening with Captain Branthan, the mortally wounded Iron Hands captain being kept alive in stasis, and we encounter the Alpha Legion.  And of course NOTHING is what it seems!

The Seventh Serpent is a limited edition novella, and will be available at The Black Library website soon.

Good hunting!

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Well, no surprise here.

Tom Kirby hired the COO of Games Workshop as the new CEO.

via Games Workshop Investor Relations:

The Board of Games Workshop is pleased to announce the appointment of Kevin Rountree as Chief Executive Officer with effect from 1 January 2015.

Tom Kirby, Chairman and Acting Chief Executive Officer, will take up the position of Non-Executive Chairman with effect from that date.

Kevin, 45, joined Games Workshop in 1998. He is currently Chief Operating Officer of the Company.

Commenting on the appointment, Tom Kirby said: “The Board undertook a thorough process in selecting our new CEO, receiving a significant number of applications for the position, both internal and external. Kevin was the outstanding candidate.

The board congratulates Kevin on his appointment and wishes him every success in his new role.”

Now what is amazing is the interviews happened on November 7th.  So they made a decision that fast?  Sounds like they had already made up their mind and no one interviewed was taken seriously.

I can't fault elevating a 16 year veteran of the company who managed the operations, to CEO.  If you are going to hire someone internal, that is the right position to hire from.

But what we most likely get is stagnation. It is doubtful there will be new thinking or new ideas.  I am sure Kevin is extremely capable, but he would only have been hired if he was going to follow the Kirby plan, the results of which have gotten GW into the situation they are in.

The only good news is Tom Kirby is now non-executive chairman, so his role is, on the surface, smaller.  Let's hope he allows Kevin the room to put HIS imprint on a company that needs a massive overhaul.

While there is much I like about GW's strategy lately, velocity of releases, quality of product.  (And I am a huge fan of The Black Library and Forge World), their core strategy is flawed.  The company has failed to adapt to the shrinking market share, the inability to retain long time gamers because of price, and the alienation of their independent retailers.

I am hoping for the best, but in all honesty, GW needs to be a privately held company.
